What is the purpose of a fume hood?

Fume hoods are our signature product for laboratory safety. They capture a range of fumes, vapors, and particles that may be toxic or hazardous.

They work by drawing in contaminated air and then expelling the air exhaust, either by disposing of it directly outside or by filtering it and reusing it.

This design is very effective because it keeps the operators safe by not letting them take in any toxic fumes and keeps the experimental samples safe by not letting any toxic substances in the air contaminate the samples.

What is the difference between a fume hood and an exhaust hood?

Purpose:

Fume hood: A particular piece of equipment used in laboratory settings that is used to contain and capture dangerous vapors and prevent the spread of toxic dust, thus avoiding contamination of the work area and injury to the personnel.

Exhaust hood: A general-purpose ventilation device that is used in kitchens (e.g. in a restaurant) or workshops (e.g. in a factory) to exhaust heat, cooking fumes, and odors. It is important to note that it is not capable of handing toxic chemicals in a laboratory.

Design:

Fume hood: Has an inward airflow system that is calibrated. Its structure is designed to reliably contain toxic gases within the cabinet, and a filter module can be dedicated to capture the chemicals before the exhaust is discharged.

Exhaust hood: Simple design, limited to ducts used for ventilation of air to outside, no airtight isolation layers or chemical filtration designs.

Usage:

Fume hood: Used in university labs, chemical plants and medical testing labs. Excellent choice for places where staff works with corrosive chemicals, toxic chemicals or biohazardous materials.

Exhaust hood: Found in commercial kitchens and assembly workshops, for example. Such workplaces need only basic air circulation, and ventilation equipment need not have chemical safety features.

Fume Hoods: All models have a sliding glass viewing window (sash) as standard. This serves as a physical barrier between the staff and the chemicals, and reduces the risk of exposure.

Exhaust hood: Has only an airflow function, has no protective window, and has no negative pressure isolation design to contain harmful substances.

What is a fume hood used for in chemistry?

Our fume hoods are used in all types of chemical labs as a core piece of equipment.

All types of chemical reactions can lead to the formation of volatile vapors, toxic dust or corrosive gases. Fume hoods capture these dangerous byproducts to safeguard lab personnel from inhaling them.

Its working principle is very intuitive. To keep a negative pressure state inside the fume hood, we design the airflow to go from the laboratory to the opening of the cabinet. This ensures that no pollutants can escape and contaminate the surrounding laboratory space. The toxic fumes will be exhausted from the system.

All of the fume hoods that we sell have an adjustable glass window and an airflow monitoring panel. The glass window can be adjusted to be lowered to give less contact with irritating chemicals. The monitoring panel keeps a status of the ventilation conditions. Without this equipment, a chemical laboratory cannot fulfill the standards for safety in the workplace.

When do you use a fume hood in chemistry class?

Our fume hoods must be used in teaching or experimenting with chemicals that are hazardous.

This regulation is similar for volatile solvents and toxic solid powders. Also, for any experiment that generates irritating or toxic gases. Therefore, this rule must be applied in all chemical experiments.

This is for the protection of the personnel in the laboratory. Fumes from chemicals can spread extremely fast. Using a fume hood keeps the chemical gases in the hood, so it protects people outside of the hood as well.

What are the principles of fume hood?

All of our designs for fume hoods are based on reliable hazard control and safety for the user.

A sliding glass window lets an operator reach in to perform tasks and blocks splashes and fumes. It also allows the window to be moved up and down to change the size of the opening.

In-flowing air is controlled to be of absolute core importance to the functioning of the window. Our fume hoods keep a stable negative pressure within the cabinet, and air moves from the laboratory through the fume hood opening. Toxic vapors created during an experiment are collected within the hood and exhausted to ensure they do not escape into the laboratory.

Also, do not overlook routine checks and maintenance. To ensure the safe and continuous operation of the fume hood, the airflow must be tested and filter cartridges must be changed or cleaned on schedule. We have a maintenance checklist and guidance for all our models. Neglect of routine maintenance will result in the fume hood completely losing the ability to capture toxic substances.

What is the expected service life of a fume hood?

From my experience in the industry and testing our fume hoods, I would say that our fume hoods will have a reliable operation for a period of 15 to 25 years under standard laboratory conditions.

The lifespan of a fume hood is affected by many things, including the quality of the materials used to make it, how often it is used each day, and if maintenance is done regularly. Of these, the quality of the materials used is the most important. The best way for our customers to ensure the longevity of their equipment is to perform daily cleaning and timely replacement of consumables.

There are other important day-to-day operations that affect the longevity of the fume hood. One of these is the procedure used to operate the equipment. If the procedures are done incorrectly, it can affect the integrity of the internal structures of the equipment and increase the risk of failure of the safety features of the equipment. After 15 years of use, we suggest that a comprehensive test of pollutant control and airflow be performed, and if the fume hood is determined to be deficient, we can provide new parts or a full replacement unit.

What is the difference between a fume hood and a biosafety cabinet?

There are many customers who, when unfamiliar with cleanroom products, combine these two pieces of equipment, but here I want to say that even though they are both types of ventilation equipment, their protective functions are quite different, so they cannot be simply equated.

A fume hood is a type of equipment that protects an operator from chemical hazards. A properly functioning fume hood can remove all toxic, corrosive, and dangerous chemicals from the work area, thereby protecting the operator and the work area from contaminating and circulating harmful chemicals.

Our biosafety cabinets are designed to contain bacteria and viruses. They provide dual protection by keeping laboratory personnel safe and preventing cross-contamination of biological samples. An internal HEPA filter captures airborne pathogens, and without it, infectious agents would escape the cabinet, affecting the culture of the experiment. A biosafety cabinet is required for any experiment that involves bacteria, viruses, or cell cultures, and cannot be substituted by a standard fume hood.
